Golf basics for beginners
Four things to get right before you worry about anything else.
Most swing problems start before the club moves. Grip, posture, aim and ball position are called the fundamentals for a reason. Get them close to right and everything else gets easier.
1. Grip
- Hold the club mostly in your fingers, not deep in your palm.
- Both hands work as a pair. The “V” shapes made by thumb and forefinger on each hand should point roughly at your trail shoulder.
- Hold it firmly, not tightly. Think of holding a bird: enough to keep it, not enough to hurt it.
2. Stance and posture
- Feet about shoulder width apart for a full shot. Narrower for short shots.
- Bend from the hips, not the waist, with a slightly soft knee flex.
- Let your arms hang naturally below your shoulders.
- Ball position: middle of the stance for short irons, a little further forward for longer clubs, and off the front heel for the driver.
3. Aim
Pick a small target in the distance, then find a spot a metre or two in front of the ball on that line. Aim the clubface at the spot first, then set your feet and shoulders parallel to the line, like train tracks. Most beginners aim their body too far right or left of the target.
Lay a club on the ground along your toe line while you practise. It shows you straight away where your feet are really pointing.
4. A simple swing
- Turn your shoulders back while your arms follow. Keep your head fairly steady.
- Start the downswing by shifting your weight toward the target.
- Swing through the ball, do not stop at it. Finish with your chest facing the target and your weight on your front foot.
Smooth beats fast. Hit 70 percent shots with good balance and you will usually go further than with all-out swings.
Your first round
- Start with a short course, a par 3 course or a few holes at the range.
- Play from the forward tees.
- Take a dozen pre-loved balls. You will lose some, so Practice and Beginner balls are made for this.
- Forget your score. Count good shots instead.
